Our foundation strives to bring awareness to how the past informs the present with events that spotlight both. With generous donations from individuals and businesses we are able to support museum events that keep our history alive.

Our Mission

Established in 1992, the Museum Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of Anacortes. Our volunteers promote preservation and development through donations, fundraising and hosting events. Your donation enhances museum services and funds special programs, events and museum necessities.

With a mission to preserve and interpret the history of Fidalgo and Guemes Islands and nurture in the community and awareness and appreciation of it’s heritage, the museum functions as an ongoing time capsule for our community. Their exhibits and events spotlight the history of our community and how it has shaped where we are today.

W.T.Preston Snagboat

As the last sternwheeler to work in the Puget Sound, we are lucky to have one of only two remaining snagboats in our city. The W.T. Preston removed navigational hazards from waterways that fed into the Puget Sound. Currently, it is located at 703 R Avenue and can be toured Saturdays and Sundays (additional hours during summer months) at no cost, or with a guide for a small fee.

Maritime Heritage Center

From its earliest days Anacortes has been connected to the sea. The Heritage Center tells the stories of shipbuilding, sailing, the fishing industry, even the rowing team that inspired the book, The Boys in the Boat. Share in the history of maritime in our community, it’s effect on the local economy, and how it shaped Anacortes.

Bill Mitchell Mural Project

Comprised of 150 mural paintings located around Anacortes and Guemes Island, this project by late local artist, Bill Mitchell, visually tells the story of our town.
